In 1874, the Fanwood Train Station opened for the very first time.

For a small town, it was a defining moment. Suddenly, Fanwood was no longer just a quiet stop along the way. It became connected to the rest of New Jersey and the larger world beyond it.

Over time, that Station became more than a place where trains arrived and departed. It became part of the heartbeat of the community.

That spirit is what inspired our name.

1874 is not just a year to us. It represents the idea that when people come together, something bigger begins to happen. Conversation. Relationships. Community. Connection.

The partners behind 1874 all have deep roots in Scotch Plains and Fanwood, and bringing this concept to life in our “Hometown” is something we are incredibly proud of. This is our “Community” and 1874 is allowing our roots to grow a little deeper.

Throughout this process, we kept coming back to one simple phrase:

From handcrafted espresso drinks to signature cold brew and small-batch roasted coffee, everything is made intentionally and with real attention to detail. Building a great coffee house means creating both, a great experience and a great cup of coffee.
